Survive the exhausting marathon (read: parenting) with these 10 tips

Parenting can feel like a never-ending marathon. It’s exhausting, even exhausting, and sometimes just plain ridiculous. With these 10 tips you can come through the race with your head held high and a touch of humor.

1. Accept help

Don’t feel guilty asking for help, even Batman needs Robin.

2. Sleep when the baby sleeps

Try to sleep when the baby sleeps, unless you want to enjoy the quiet ambiance of household chores. Seriously, why would you want to dust everything off at 3am?

3. Take care of yourself

Eat healthy, drink enough water and keep moving. But if you want to eat a piece of pie and watch Netflix, go ahead. Sometimes that’s better than going to the gym.

4. Let go of some household chores

A little dust and clutter add character to your home. So don’t be too perfectionist and play with your toddler.

5. Seek support from other parents

Talk to other parents about the highs and lows of parenting. And especially share the funny moments, because after all, laughter is the best medicine. Well, everyone is tired.

6. Schedule time for yourself

Set aside time for yourself to relax. And if you don’t trust yourself to actually relax, schedule a massage or a wine tasting. That works too.

7. Use technology

Make it easy on yourself and use technology. And if your child takes your phone away, remember that they probably take better selfies than you.

8. Divide the tasks

Divide the tasks with your partner. And if he or she doesn’t know how to get the baby into a romper, let her figure it out for herself. Maybe it will still provide hilarious images for the gram.

9. Plan quality time with your older child(ren)

It can be difficult to make time for your older kids, especially if you’re always busy with the younger kids. Therefore, schedule regular quality time with your older children to talk, laugh and do fun things. This can help you reduce stress and strengthen the bond with your children.

10. Be patient

Parenting is not a sprint, but a marathon. And when you feel like you’re on mile 42, remember all the funny moments and laugh at yourself. It will be all right.

There are of course hundreds of tips and everyone applies something different. Make sure to enjoy this rollercoaster ride, because it’s one you’ll never come back to.
