Surgical Separation of Siamese Twins Prepared in Virtual Reality Operating Room
It’s a first. In Brazil, two Siamese twins attached by the head underwent an extremely complicated operation to “separate” the two patients. Everything went well in the end and the two 4-year-old children, Bernardo and Arthur Lima, are now “freed” from their physical shackles. However, they will remain under observation for a period of 6 months.

This very delicate operation was prepared beforehand… in a virtual reality surgery room! An international team of surgeons was thus able to “train” for many months and repeat the most sensitive gestures. The 3D model of the children in the VR room was even made using the scanners of the two little patients!

For the charity Gemini Untwined, which fully funded this high-risk surgery, this operation is the most complicated that a surgeon has ever had to perform. The feat is all the more important as the operation prepared in VR followed 7 separation operations which had all ended in failure.
