Successor must do without desired feature

With the iPad Mini 6, Apple made a big splash last year. A missing feature, which has been standard in the Pro models for years, caused criticism. The successor will not change anything about that, says a renowned Apple expert.

Apple took almost ten years to give the iPad Mini a complete makeover. In 2021 the time had come: a new design, a new chip, new connections and support for the Apple Pencil 2. But one detail was missing for perfection: a 120 Hz display. The successor will not change that either, says Apple expert Ross Young.

No iPad Mini 7 with 120Hz display

“I’d be surprised,” was Young’s dry reply to the latest reports from Asia that the iPad Mini 7 will have a 120 Hz display. As a reason for his skepticism Young refers to the underlying display technology the current Mini generation. the support promotionis what Apple calls its high refresh rate screens, not at all.

Theoretically, it would of course be possible for Apple to change the display technology for the iPad Mini 7. However, Young obviously does not seem to consider this step to be particularly likely. Young is one of the most renowned and reliable technology expertshis forecasts have often turned out to be correct in the past.

ProMotion for Pro devices only

Indeed, when looking at Apple’s lineup, Young’s assessment makes sense. So far, ProMotion can only be found in the devices that Apple calls “Pro”: iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and recently also the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Eventually Apple will break this rule and 120 Hz displays too into the entry-level and middle class. However, it is doubtful that this will already be the case with the iPad Mini 7.
