Stress has a major impact on the learning performance of primary school children

Poor performance at school? Research shows that children’s learning performance is lower on average if they suffer from stress and are less able to relax. No less than 1 in 3 children in group 5 suffer from stress, mainly due to problems related to money.

Do the children have access to culture or can they relax in other ways? This in turn has a positive effect on learning performance. Relaxation in the form of staying with friends, going into the woods and discovering nature or exercising outside also have a positive effect.

“The head is full”

Nearly 800 primary schools participated in the study ‘Opportunity inequality in the Netherlands’ by SEO Economic Research. This was commissioned by the ABN AMRO Foundation and the Youth Education Fund.

Hans Spekman, director of the Youth Education Fund, finds the conclusion shocking and says against it RTL News: “One in three children is really an awful lot. When children experience stress, they perform less well at school because their heads are full of problems. Some children then slam shut and become very quiet, but other children become very loud.”

School advice

The home situation also appears to have a major influence on how children perform at school. Children who receive (on average) an executive vocational advice come from a family with a lower income of less than 20,000 euros. Children who grow up with a higher income of around 40,000 euros receive (on average) a HAVO recommendation.
