Streaming service HBO Max gets a new name

HBO Max is undergoing a name change to simply “Max”. The popular streaming service, known for its rich selection of films, series and documentaries, has decided to simplify its name and adopt a new identity. This name change doesn’t just come with a new brand name. There are also a series of exciting changes and improvements for the streaming service.

In the month of October of 2018, the big WarnerMedia announced an OTT streaming service. Finally, in May 2020, HBO Max launched in the United States as a premium streaming service. Since March 2022, HBO Max has also started in the Netherlands.

The service was able to quickly achieve success by distinguishing itself with popular shows such as Game of Thrones, Succession, Friends and many others. However, as competition in the streaming market has increased, HBO Max has decided to rethink its brand name and take a new direction.

Appealing to a wider audience

The name change to Max is intended to give the service a fresh look and appeal to a wider audience. By simplifying the name to Max, the streaming service aims to be more accessible to a wider range of viewers, whether they’re familiar with HBO as a brand or not. In the United States, the name HBO Max will be changed to Max as early as May. In the Netherlands, the change will only take place in 2024.

Max will keep the same prices as HBO Max. This means that a basic subscription still costs 5.99 per month and an annual subscription 46.99 euros. HBO Max offered a lifetime discount for users who subscribed before April 1, 2022. This means users pay 50 percent less. Whether this action will also apply to Max remains to be seen.
