Tiktok has published a trend report for the first time. Marketers should be up to date with the latest trends on the short video platform and thus also be able to optimize their content.

The Tiktok trends for 2021: creativity and animals

Under the title “Tiktok: What’s next”, the video portal has compiled which trends, content formats and topics could determine the year 2021. To this end, Tiktok analyzed from January to November 2020 which topics and content categories were most consumed and where the number of hits rose particularly sharply. The most popular hashtags were also determined.

From a global perspective, Tiktok’s trend report shows that the community is particularly interested in content in which users report from their everyday lives. But comedy, video games, film and television as well as animal content always work. The fastest growing categories include news and events, but music, photography and environmental protection are also trending strongly. Clips on poultry farming are also very popular in the community.

In addition to the general statements, Tiktok was also able to identify numerous regional peculiarities in the course of the analysis, which are presented in individual trend reports. This allows marketers to gain very target group-oriented insights and adapt their content accordingly.

Sport, fashion and beauty determine the trends in the German-speaking area

The trend report for the DACH region – i.e. Germany, Austria and Switzerland – shows that content on topics such as sport, fashion and beauty was particularly well received by users. How practical that Tiktok is currently working on shopping options for the platform.

According to Tiktok, the community has shown a lot of creativity and invented new games, challenges and sports to cope with the pandemic situation. Household items or whatever was lying around at home were misappropriated in order to stay fit even in lockdown. Overall, Tiktok recorded a 75 percent growth in sports-related content from January to November 2020. Popular hashtags are #fussball, #volleyball and #basketball, but also #funny, #skill and #spass.

“The bedroom is becoming a catwalk”, writes Tiktok – despite closed shops and little opportunity to peel off pajamas and cozy trousers, Tiktok users are crazy about fashion content. Thanks to many preset filters and in-app tools, outfits could be creatively staged. According to Tiktok, it didn’t matter whether there was a supermodel in front of the camera – what counted was a wealth of ideas and a willingness to experiment. This also resulted in a content growth of 46 percent. When it comes to hashtags, #ootd, #fashion and #tiktokfashion, but also #streetwear and #couple are ahead.

The third trend, Beauty, is particularly user-oriented. Tiktokers shared tips and tricks and tested and rated products – in a very inclusive and diverse way. Here, too, the community relies heavily on their own initiative – brands should therefore think “outside the box”, be innovative and focus on the process instead of the result. Beauty content on Tiktok increased by 41 percent from January to November 2020. The most popular hashtags include #makeup, #tutorial and #skincare, but #acne, #duft and #girlssupportinggirls are also used a lot.
