Spammers are now sending messages that come from you!
We know spammers now, but if it comes from your own number it’s a bit creepy†
Not everything you get in your inbox is actually useful or worth clicking on. If you receive a link from a random 06 number that ‘you still have to transfer 500 euros to the tax authorities’, all alarm bells should already go off. We hope we don’t tell you anything new now, because spammers with random links have been going on for a while. If you click on that link, you will be scammed. So don’t do it.
Spammers choose you!
Well, an unknown number with a link should set alarm bells ringing, but it does get quite confronting when the link comes from… yourself! It happens to several people from the US. A spam message that looks just like everyone else, but sent from your own number. Which means that you see your own number, or name, or profile picture, while of course you do not send yourself any spam links. huh?
The problem often seems to happen to telecom company Verizon in the US, which can’t do much about it. Neither do you, although it is not harmful either. It’s just a spammer’s camouflage, just using your own number as a cover for yourself. It’s not like your number has been hacked or there’s a data breach at Verizon. There is a spam report feature, though, where Verizon may need your help to make sure these creepy messages don’t happen again. At least not under your name anymore.
