Sony is evaluating entry into the automotive market in 2022
In the last few years, two major industries have been moving consistently towards one another: the technology sector, which is mostly dominated by American companies, and the automotive industry, which has gained a foothold in this country. Many companies are therefore trying to go beyond their previous core expertise in both directions and try something new. After all, anyone who wants to sell an autonomous vehicle at some point has to demonstrate expertise in both areas.
One example is Foxconn, which was previously known more as a supplier to smartphone manufacturers. It was only in October of last year that three different vehicle types were presented that could be put on the streets in the near future [1]. Or let’s take Apple, which has been researching its own vehicle for years but has not yet really been able to win partners for itself [2].
Another more tech-focused company that is putting out feelers is Sony. The producer of, among other things, Playstations, cameras and televisions would like to found a new subsidiary in the spring to evaluate entry into the market with electric vehicles. Then the Japanese could also have their own electric vehicle.
The announcement comes after the presentation of the VISION-S 02, an SUV that is to be tested on public roads with immediate effect. The slightly smaller VISION-S 01 was presented in December 2020, but since then it has been quiet about Sony’s efforts.
Both models are based on the same platform, which saves costs and could promote the start of series production soon. So far, the company has been relatively aloof when it comes to a market launch, so it will be exciting to see what will happen in the next few months.
Nevertheless, you will not be able to fully compete with BMW, Daimler and Co. when it comes to autonomous driving. As a company spokesman announced, they are currently developing systems for autonomous driving of level 2. Here the competition is already significantly further, but you should never underestimate the newcomer, in 2019 nobody could imagine that Tesla would become the most valuable car brand in the world [4].
