Sony Ericsson Spiro

The year 2010 was an important year for Sony Ericsson, the brand that is now simply called ‘Sony’. The brand came in that year with its first Android smartphone; the Sony Xperia X10. In that year, however, the ‘normal’ devices also appeared; such as the Sony Ericsson Spiro, which we cover today in ‘The Forgotten Phone’.

In the summer of 2010, Sony presented this device, as a successor to the Sony Ericsson W205 that we discussed earlier. The Spiro was presented as a Walkman phone, so to speak an ideal device for the music lover. Before this, the phone had an FM radio on board and of course a music player. Operating the music player was done via the navigation key below the screen. This gave you the option to pause your music or skip to another song. You could also use Track ID, the predecessor of Shazam. Through PlayNow you could buy content.

The Sony Ericsson Spiro did have some influences from the smartphone series that was called Xperia. We saw this, for example, in the interface with the well-known blue color, which again worked differently than with previous SE models. The stylish phone also had integration for social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, although that was of course via a GPRS or EDGE connection.

There was only 5MB of memory, so a memory card was a must. This allowed the memory to be expanded. On the back was a simple 2 megapixel camera, without the addition of a flash. WiFi was not available on the device, but Bluetooth was available and you could use the 3.5 millimeter connection. The screen had a size of 2.2 inches and had a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.

Sony Ericsson released the Spiro for an amount of around 60 euros. The device appeared in different colors; red, silver, green, pink and black. You could also opt for the white-colored Spiro.

Sony Ericsson Spiro summarized in 3 points:

  • Walkman phone
  • 2.2 inch display
  • New interface with social media integration
