Sony draws the line: the PS4 is buried

The PlayStation 4 is now 9 years old – Sony’s last-gen console will soon be able to retire. At least that’s what new information from the company’s annual report suggests. Sony finally seems to want to draw a line.

The PS4 may still be the console of choice for many gamers at the moment, but the former bestseller is actually now a thing of the past. The release of the PS5 is now a year and a half ago, the console crisis is slowly ebbing away.

Sony also seems to be slowly saying goodbye to its last-gen darling. At least that’s what a new chart suggests, showing that the company From 2025 no more first-party games for the PS4 will develop.

After all, the gallows period is quite generous. Apparently, around three years are still planned for the transition phase. Until then hopefully the PS5 should also be widely availableso that all fans really had at least the chance to switch to the next generation of consoles.

What also catches the eye when looking at the graphics: Sony seems to be platform diverse to want to set up. While in 2019 only around 10 percent of the first-party releases found their way to the PC – and mobile played no role at all – this should change in the next few years. Around 50 percent of the games should appear for the PS5 in 2025, around 30 percent for the PC and the remaining 20 percent for mobile devices.

The PS4 had a good run

To date, Sony could nearly 117 million Selling PS4 consoles, earning fourth place on the list of the world’s best-selling consoles. Only the Game Boy, the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2 were even more popular.

However, since the launch of the PS5, PS4 sales have all but ground to a halt. In the last fiscal year, the last-gen console was only sold around a million times and could therefore be overtaken by the Nintendo Switch later this year. Nevertheless, Sony has had a good run with the PS4 – and the console still has a few years to go.
