a quarter of readers have been using their smartphone for more than 3 years

27 percent of Androidworld readers spend more than 3 years with their smartphone. People used to get a new phone pretty standard every year simply because a new version came out. In the meantime, the differences between the telephones are no longer that far apart, so that it is clearly increasingly common that people can continue with their device for three years.

AW Poll

Dotternetta is such a person: “Previously switched with OnePlus every year, but now I’ve had it with my Realme X2 Pro for 3 years, and there is nothing interesting new for sale.” Fortunately, there are few smartphones that can last less than three years in terms of updates, because with so many people using their phone for more than 3 years, it is essential that the devices are provided with security and software updates. In addition, we also see that many people use their telephones between the ages of 2 and 3, although that has always remained about the same in recent years: 25 percent in 2022.

How long do you last with a device?

There are also quite a few people who only use a device for half a year: 16 percent, although we have to say that we are of course an Android website and many visitors come here who are extremely interested in telephones. If you read more often about what new phones can do and you are more involved with them anyway, then it is likely that you also change phones a little more often. Although every 6 months is very often.

Strikingly enough, there are fewer people who use their device between 6 months and 1 year: 10 percent last that long with their device. This is often longer: 23 percent spend between 1 and 2 years with a device.

Comparison previous years

The nice thing is that we haven’t asked this question for the first time. We have therefore put the data from 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 side by side to show you what the progress is. The ‘longer than 3 years’ group in particular is growing significantly every year. We did not do this poll in 2020, which is why we miss a year of data. Furthermore, it can be seen that fewer and fewer people between 6 months and 2 years use their device. More often people go for 2 years or longer. A big advantage for your wallet, but also for the planet. Nice work that Khalid: he has been doing it for 4.5 years with his Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.

Many people are therefore increasingly able to resist the temptation of new devices. Great to see that this topic makes you so excited to share stories about your own devices and of course how long you have been using it or want to do it.

You don’t have to take very long with the poll, you’ll just see a new one appearing here on Androidworld next week. Until then!
