social media urgently needs more rules

Policymakers need to take a tighter rein on the internet. The results of our AW Poll show that our readers believe that social media apps need more regulation to address the various issues.

AW Poll social media

Social media is a huge success, because apps like Facebook and Twitter managed to climb to several billion users in no time. They are the apps most downloaded on smartphones, and yet at the same time there is dissatisfaction.

Social media also has the other side of the coin. Think of large-scale privacy scandals, fake messages, cases of defamation and hatred and monopolies of power. As a result, only 5.9 percent of those surveyed in our recent AW Poll say they are satisfied with how social media apps work. A much larger share sees the future of social media bleak as a 41.4% say the world is better off without these services.

Need for rules

However, the majority (46.4%) remain positive, although they do not deny that there are problems. Readers are looking to the policy makers worldwide to make fair rules for companies that run social media apps. Fair competition must be possible and, on the other hand, the privacy of users must be protected.

Social media has a huge impact on society, which is proven every day. It is therefore perhaps not illogical for such a broader legal framework to be introduced. What do you think of the results of this poll? Do you find it surprising how the other AW readers think? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
