Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: What performance for which smartphones?
The chip that will equip most future smartphones within a few months has been unveiled by Qualcomm. CPU performance will increase without revolutionizing the SoC, with a 35% gain compared to Gen 1. However, these chips include a number of components that affect mobile use. It is on these modifications that the American brand relies above all.
AI for performance
The heart of the revolution brought by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is Snapdragon Smart, an AI developed by Qualcomm. It would allow up to 4.35 times more performance, enough to imagine even more powerful and fast features.

The SoC is equipped with the latest Qualcomm AI Engine as well as a latest generation Hexagon processor, to further support multi-language translation needs as well as AI-assisted photography. An IA precision format has been integrated to increase performance / watt by 60% compared to generation 1. Finally, it is not an easy task, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 benefits from a great improvement in compared to Gen 1: a 40% gain in energy consumption. Important point when you know the importance for the buyer of the battery life of smartphones.
Made for the smartphones of tomorrow
This SoC therefore arrives as a powerful central chip, with AI reinforcement perfectly suited to contemporary uses of smartphones. In addition, the performance dedicated to leisure (in particular games) will be boosted. the Adreno GPUs wins 25% compared to the previous generation, ray tracing is managed natively by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the latest advances in the Unreal Engine are supported by this generation. In addition, the video decoding goes up to 8K HDR in 60 fps, even if for the moment the videos requiring this rendering are not legion.

To end this guided tour, note the support for WiFi 7, the improvement of Bluetooth latency as well as a reinforcement on 5G compatibility, a whole lot of connectivity improvements are also part of the latest nugget from Qualcomm .
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: it’s going to heat up
The central chip therefore arrives on the market with the most promising performance and technology. It is already announced in 2023 by several major brands, such as Sony, Xiaomi, Asus or even OnePlus. The first smartphones equipped with the chip should be announced by the end of 2022, like the Vivo X90 which should be presented in December. Other war prizes were achieved, as with the future Galaxy S23. Samsung seems to have decided to replace its Exynos SoCs with Qualcomm chips.
