Smartphone sales fall by 11% in the first quarter of 2022

According to a study, worldwide smartphone shipments have fallen by as much as 11%. According to the results, Samsung is still the largest, this time the company has a market share of 24%. What about the rest?

Overall decline

According to the research conducted by Canalys, an independent analyst firm, global smartphone sales are being held back by the current turmoil in the corporate market and environment. You have to think of the corona crisis, the war between Russia and Ukraine and the high inflation. On the one hand, this results in a smaller demand from the consumer, as well as a smaller supply from the manufacturers. However, the decline in the smartphone market seems to mainly affect the Chinese manufacturers. The biggest players in the smartphone market seem to have gotten bigger.

Major manufacturers are doing well

Despite the overall decline, the major smartphone manufacturers have increased in share. In the first three months of this year, Samsung has achieved a market share of 24%. Last year this share was 22% in the same period. Six months ago, Samsung had a 19% share.

Apple has also gained a larger market share. From 15% in the first three months of last year, to 18% this year. Despite the decline in the smartphone market, the major manufacturers are therefore able to obtain a larger share in this market. A Canalys analyst provides a possible reason for this: ”Despite the looming uncertainty in global markets, the leading suppliers accelerated their growth by broadening their portfolios for 2022. Samsung, for example, increased the production of its A-line to compete (even) better in the budget and midrange segment.”
