Smartphone competition has to dress warmly

Google is building better and better pixel smartphones every year. Since the company has been using its own processors and can therefore adapt the hardware even better to the software, the cell phones seem liberated and support functions that you can’t find in the competition for a long time. Google was also able to celebrate a great success with the camera in 2022. In 2023, this part should be even better.

This year, Google has achieved what many manufacturers dream of with the Pixel 7 Pro. According to DxOMark, the smartphone had the world’s best cell phone camera for some time. A few weeks later, Google was again trumped by Huawei, but it was still a huge success for Google because machine learning was able to show what it really can do.

Google Pixel 8 Pro with an even better camera

Actually, many would have expected that Google would only improve the camera software on the Pixel 8 Pro and keep the hardware for the time being. This has been the case with many Pixel phones in recent years. But it probably won’t come to that. The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro should get a new main sensor, the Staggered HDR supported. Several HDR shots with different exposures are taken at the same time, so that the Accelerated completion of HDR image will.

The Samsung GN1 sensor built into the Pixel 7 smartphones does not support “staggered HDR” on the hardware side. Accordingly, Google would have to rely on a new sensor. The Samsung GN2 would offer itself there, which masters the feature. That it will be this sensor is not confirmed. However, the “staggered HDR” mode is integrated in the code of the Google camera app and the Pixel 8 (Pro) needs new hardware for this.

Good for Google, bad for the smartphone competition

So Google is not getting stuck with the camera sensor, as has been the case in recent years, and is sticking with one model for a long time, but is moving with the times and probably wants to add more to the Pixel 8 (Pro). The Pixel 7 Pro (test) is already one of the best camera smartphones in the world. With the Pixel 8 Pro, things should go one step further. This means Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor and Apple have even tougher competition.
