Slow connection? Now share photos faster via Messages

Whether you’re on a high-speed train or just live in a place with thick concrete walls and poor coverage: you don’t always have fast internet. For those moments, Google Messages now makes it easier to share photos in the Messages app. The quality of the photo does deteriorate, but you can send a photo over a poorer connection.

Rich Communication Services

Some photos are much larger than others, which has everything to do with the quality of the image. The more pixels, the more information the photo contains and the larger the file size. By automatically making the photos smaller in terms of file size, you can send them sooner. 9to5Google writes that Google probably added this feature mainly for RCS.

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services and is a new protocol developed to take the place of SMS, where much more than text can be sent. Files with large formats can also be sent via RCS, but if the connection fails you, there is now also an option to still send a photo, but then just a little less beautiful in quality.

Many photos that are texted are mainly intended to be practical, rather than going into a photo book. For photo book photos, people are more likely to use mail, Drive or WeTransfer, knowing that the quality will be preserved.

Right now, the new feature is only available to a limited number of people, but it’s likely to roll out to everyone using Google Messages soon. If you already have it, you can see it by looking in the Settings for Messages. The option is between Bubbles and Hear sounds for outgoing and incoming messages. It’s called “Send Photos Faster.”
