Chocolate ginger nuts and chocolate letters are not to be missed at the Sinterklaas party. And as tasty as it is, chocolate is extremely dangerous for your dog. This year too, dogs become seriously ill or even die from eating chocolate treats.

Data from pet insurance company Petplan shows that the number of pet chocolate poisonings has already increased by 5 percent this year. And that while the Sinterklaas party hasn’t even ended yet.

Chocolate poisoning in dogs

“It’s a party every year, but not in the right way,” says Daniëlle Koolmoes of Petplan. “Despite the fact that most owners know that chocolate is bad for their dog, such a letter or a bowl of chocolate ginger nuts sometimes accidentally remains somewhere that the dog can reach. And yes, then it is: bite, swallow, away.” So be extra alert to your dog during this period, also later with the Christmas wreaths.

Symptoms

Dogs can become very ill or even die from eating chocolate. “That is why it is important that an owner knows what the symptoms of chocolate poisoning are,” explains veterinarian Nienke Mulder. “With mild symptoms, the dog can vomit and get diarrhea. In case of severe poisoning, the dog can shiver, experience palpitations and in some cases even epileptic seizures.” These symptoms can occur after a few hours. It is important to take your dog to a vet as soon as possible.
