should schools pay more attention to programming?

We write on Androidworld almost daily about apps and games that are in Google Play. The apps and games that programmers create for users. Are there enough programmers? And do you also have an interest in being able to program if you don’t want to become a programmer? What do you think?

Why learn programming early?

“In the future, being able to program will probably be just as important as being able to speak good English,” reports the Media Literacy website. According to this website, programming teaches children to create rather than consume: “So it is not by definition intended to train children to become programmers, but to teach them skills that will benefit them in any profession.”

Your chances in the job market are also probably better if you can program. There is already a shortage of technically skilled personnel, and experts predict that the technology sector will grow by more than 30% by 2030. Many countries are already taking steps to prevent this shortage now and in the future. For example, programming languages in England have been included in the curriculum of all primary schools from 2014 onwards. In Estonia, programming is a compulsory subject for children between the ages of 7 and 19. Programming is not yet a compulsory subject in primary school in the Netherlands, but the government wants more attention to be paid to this subject.

Digital Literacy

Lotte de Bruijn, director of trade association NLdigital, indicated in the Spraakmakers program that the Netherlands is one of the few European countries that chooses not to include digital literacy in the education program. Bruijn also indicates that almost every profession in our economy contains more and more digital elements: “To ensure that children later receive the right ‘tools’, primary education must be taught in digital literacy. information skills, but also lessons on media literacy and programming, for example.”

It has been proven that it is easier to learn a language at a young age than at a later age. Learning one or more programming languages in primary school therefore seems a sensible choice. What do you think? Let us know in our poll below and tell us why in the comments.
