Set DuckDuckGo as a search engine in Google Chrome or Safari

The browsers Google Chrome and Safari use Google as the default search engine. But did you know you can change this to the more privacy-friendly DuckDuckGo? In this tip you can read how to change the default search engine.

Change search engine to DuckDuckGo

A browser’s address bar is useful not only for navigating to a website, but also for Googling. By default, Google is used for this, but this can be changed to the more privacy-friendly DuckDuckGo. This search engine does not collect any data and therefore does not build user profiles.

DuckDuckGo as a search engine in Google Chrome

Is Google Chrome your ‘gate’ to the world wide web? On the iPhone, set DuckDuckGo as the default search engine as follows:

  1. Open your iPhone’s Google Chrome app;
  2. Tap the three dots at the bottom right;
  3. Choose ‘Settings’ and select ‘Search Engine’;
  4. Check ‘DuckDuckGo’.

If you enter a search term in the address bar, Google Chrome will now turn to DuckDuckGo to search. On the Google Chrome macOS app, do the following to change the search engine to DuckDuckGo:

  1. Open your Mac’s Google Chrome app;
  2. Click on ‘Chrome’ in the top left menu and choose ‘Preferences’;
  3. Click on ‘Search engine’ in the panel on the left;
  4. Next to ‘Search engine used in address bar’, choose ‘DuckDuckGo’.

DuckDuckGo as search engine in Safari

The search engine can also be adjusted in Safari. This is how you do it on the iPhone:

  1. Open your iPhone’s Settings app;
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Safari’;
  3. Tap ‘Search Engine’;
  4. Select ‘DuckDuckGo’.

DuckDuckGo can also be set as the default search engine of the Mac version of Safari:

  1. Open the Safari app on your Mac;
  2. Click on ‘Safari’ in the top left menu and choose ‘Preferences’;
  3. Go to the ‘Search’ tab;
  4. Set the pop-up behind ‘Search Engine’ to ‘DuckDuckGo’.
