The printer management problems in Windows 10 persist. The update published by Microsoft did not provide the necessary remedy – less than 24 hours later, another critical security hole became known.

Windows 10: New security hole surfaced

Microsoft has been struggling with serious printer management issues known as “PrintNightmare” on Windows 10 for months. The supposed solution, which was last distributed as a security update, did not lead to the desired remedy. Just one day later, a security researcher reports one new and serious loophole in Microsoft’s printer spooler.

According to Benjamin Delpy, could Attackers exploit the loopholeto bring PCs and notebooks with Windows 10 under your control. Files can be opened and deleted at will. In addition, it should be possible to install additional malware remotely (source: Benjamin Delpy).

Microsoft latest security update joins a whole series of patches that Microsoft has been distributing for months. The first updates to solve the printer management problem were released in July 2021.

At present, users in company networks can basically only protect themselves by deactivate the Windows spooler – but then it is no longer possible to print. Private users are hardly affected, as printers are usually directly connected to the computer and only official printer drivers from the respective manufacturer are used.

Windows 10: Attack via printer management possible

In “PrintNightmare” attacks via printer management, the Windows Spooler service is the focus. While this is looking for a suitable printer driver, can Malware via a bogus printer driver land on the Windows computer.
