School director is very concerned: ‘4-year-olds come to school in diapers’
She tells this in an interview with the AD.
More and more worried children
Many 4- to 6-year-old ‘worried children’ with problems and disadvantages have arrived in a short period of time, the school director reports. Their parents have financial problems, language delays, stress, are unemployed or there is talk of domestic violence. ‘We see that reflected in the children’, says Schouwenaar. For example, she says that 4-year-olds come to school in a diaper, cannot put on a coat independently and have a language delay. The primary school is located in a vulnerable neighbourhood. There are eight groups and two special intake groups for children who have difficulties with Dutch. The influx group continues to grow.

Attention to problems
Schouwenaar notices that parents have difficulty finding sufficient help. The school has already raised the problems with the municipality several times. ‘I can’t go behind the front door and I don’t want to. We are there for education, but we are confronted with these enormous social problems’, says the school director. The Municipality of Leidschendam has announced that in 2022 more attention will be paid to the neighbourhood, educational disadvantages and the financial situation of parents.
