Saving on fixed costs: that’s how you do it

Cancel unnecessary subscriptions and memberships

It’s great that you took a membership ten years ago in the – we call it a side-state – Dutch bridge association, but are you actually using it? And what about your subscription to newspapers that end up straight on the pile of waste paper? Take a critical look at what you have taken out in recent years, because no matter how small the amounts per month are: on an annual basis you are easily talking about hundreds of euros.

Take a closer look at your health insurance

Every year you can take out new health insurance in December. And while it’s nice and easy to keep everything as it is, it can be worth the effort to switch. Are the right things for your personal situation covered? Do you take out additional insurance or not? And how high is your deductible? They are all points to think about. You also often save a considerable amount by paying your premium per year instead of per month. And an extra tip: insure your child with the parent with the highest coverage. He or she will then automatically take advantage of this.

Do targeted shopping

The golden tip to save on your groceries: do your shopping for the whole week. Plan a fixed time during the week to think about what you want to eat in the coming days and what you should buy for it. This reduces the chance that you will throw something unnecessary in your cart during a cursory visit to the supermarket. Because before you know it you will be walking home with half the supermarket in your bag. Also handy: search through the books and websites of supermarkets for great offers (For example, here we select weekly diaper offers for you) and look for leftovers in your fridge. For example, do you have a drawer full of vegetables that actually need to be finished? Or potatoes with runners? Throw everything together, just get a piece of meat or a vegetarian alternative and you’re done. Here you will find more useful tips for saving on groceries

Plan your trips smartly (and refuel cheaply)

If you calculate in advance what a trip will cost, you can see what the cheapest way is. The rule of thumb: if you are traveling alone, go by public transport. Are you with several people? Then the car is cheaper. By the way, do not refuel on the highway, but choose a petrol station on a B-road or in a village. There the petrol is much cheaper.

Check whether you are entitled to benefits

Care allowance, childcare allowance or housing allowance: you can apply for various allowances depending on your income. Do you want to know if you are entitled to it? Then make a test calculation via the tax authorities.
