Price history of the Sony WH-1000XM3: Stable below 250 euros

The Sony WH-1000XM3, released in September 2018, is the improved successor to the Sony WH-1000XM2, which in turn is the successor to the Sony MDR-1000X (GIGA test). The starting price of the Sony WH-1000XM3 was 379 euros (RRP). In the meantime, the price level in retail has dropped, you usually don’t have to pay more than 250 euros, even prices below 230 euros can be found every now and then. With local offers you can occasionally save even more, but you have to be lucky that you happen to be there.

Sony WH-1000XM3: Purchasing headphones that is worthwhile

The Japanese manufacturer has made small improvements in sound, wearing comfort and noise canceling with each generation, so that the Sony WH-1000XM3 is highly recommended overall. We gave it a top rating in our detailed test report.

This means that Sony can sit in front of the former “noise-canceling king” Bose QuietComfort 35 II. The Sony WH-1000XM3 sounds better, offers a wider range of features, has the best noise-canceling and sits almost as comfortably on your head. What not every user might like is the touch controls of the Sony WH-1000XM3. A real weak point is the coupling with several devices (e.g. smartphone and laptop alternately) – this works more smoothly with the Bose.

Sony WH-1000XM3 or Sony WH-1000XM4?

Since the summer of 2020 the Sony WH-1000XM4th has been released, Sony fans have an even harder time deciding to buy. The improved successor of the WH-1000XM3 has been equipped with Multipoint Bluetooth and sits a little more comfortably on the head. Our detailed GIGA test report of the Sony WH-1000XM4 shows that these are almost perfect headphones.

At the end of the day, you have to look into your own wallet and consider whether the technical improvements are worth the surcharge: As expected, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is a bit more expensive and cannot yet be found in stores at the prices of the previous model.
