Samsung will stop producing LCD screens

Samsung has taken the decision to stop the production of LCD screens, it will be a reality from June according to the Korea Times. The Korean group now prefers to bet on other more recent technologies, such as OLED and QD-OLED.

End of LCD screens for Samsung

Initially, Samsung had planned to stop production of LCD screens at the end of 2020, but the group decided to keep its business following a public demand for such screens with the pandemic. Then the new plan to stop was the end of 2022. But the band finally decided to do it six months earlier because of the fees. Indeed, the company has reached a stage where it is recording losses due to the fall in prices of such screens.

According to research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), the average LCD price index, measured against 100 in January 2014, will fall to 36.6 in September this year. This figure is even lower than the record of 41.5 reached in April this year, and 58% lower than the other record of 87 reached in June 2021.

What will happen to the employees who worked on the LCD screen production lines? They will normally be transferred to the team that deals with QD-OLED screens.

For information, Samsung launched its branch dedicated to screens in 1991 and it was initially devoted to LCD panels. Naturally, the situation has changed over time, hence a focus today on OLED and QD-OLED displays.
