Samsung lets the new Galaxy S21 serve as a car key

Samsung has announced that it will collaborate with various car manufacturers. The target; offer a so-called digital key experience.

Your smartphone as a car key

Samsung announced the new Galaxy S21 series on Thursday. DroidApp has extensively discussed this series in a nice preview that we made of the three smartphones. Samsung has now shared some more news regarding the S21 series.

In the near future, Samsung wants to make it possible that you can unlock your car door with the new Galaxy S21 series (contactless). This should be possible as soon as you are close to the vehicle. That way you no longer need the car key to get into the car.

The manufacturer explains how it works;

“Samsung is working with industry associations to standardize UWB and digital keys, making this solution more readily available, more secure and shareable. With accurate distance calculation, Samsung’s UWB-compatible digital key sends short pulses between the mobile device and the paired car, unlocking the car door as soon as you are in the area. Without UWB you can use your compatible smartphone as a car key via NFC. It should also be possible to share your digital key seamlessly, regardless of brand and platform. ”

For the key digital experience, Samsung works with Audi, BMW, Ford and Genesis (Hyundai’s luxury brand). Digitizing the car key is not completely new. Vodafone and Mercedes-Benz in Germany started a collaboration in 2016. It is not known when the functionality will be widely available.
