The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G has been officially announced, which is the successor to the Galaxy A52 5G. So it’s high time to put both smartphones next to each other, because what are the similarities and differences between the two midrange smartphones?

Screens are the same size

Both phones have a 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. That high refresh rate makes images look smoother. In terms of design, both smartphones look almost identical. You can choose from an extra color with the A52 5G.

Faster chipset for the A53 and more memory

The Samsung Galaxy A52 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor and the A53 on the Exynos 1280 from Samsung itself. That processor is newer and a lot faster. You will especially notice this when gaming or mutitasken on the new phone.

Both phones are available with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. But only the Galaxy A53 also comes in a variant with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

Larger battery for the Galaxy A53

The Galaxy A53 has a larger battery, namely a 5,000 mAh unit, compared to the 4,500 mAh battery of the Galaxy A52. The battery of the A53 could therefore last considerably longer. Both phones are equipped with 25W fast charging, which results in a full battery in almost an hour.

Cameras stay the same

Both the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and the Galaxy A53 5G have the cameras below. Samsung says it has made improvements in the field of artificial intelligence for the cameras. In general, you should not expect many major differences between the two smartphones in this area.

In addition to a microSD slot, the Galaxy A52 5G also has a 3.5 mm audio jack and dual speakers. The Galaxy A53 5G also has stereo speakers and a microSD slot to expand the memory. The 3.5 mm audio jack, on the other hand, is no longer there.

Samsung has also left the charger plug out of the packaging of the A53 5G. The company does this to reduce its ecological footprint.

Galaxy A53 gets more updates

Samsung’s One UI 4.0 software shell is based on Android 12 and the Galaxy A53 runs on its latest variant, One UI 4.1. That version comes with some nice new features as you can read here. Samsung also came with good news for a range of Galaxy devices. Those devices will receive an extra year of updates. The Samsung Galaxy A53 also benefits from this new update policy and, like the more expensive S22 phones, will receive an update to Android 13, Android 14, Android 15 and Android 16 and at least five years of security updates.

The Galaxy A52 5G is not mentioned by Samsung in the overview. So we assume that the phone will receive at least three new Android versions. The phone came to the shops with One UI 3.1, which is based on Android 11. The phone can therefore still count on Android 12, Android 13 and Android 14. Furthermore, security updates are guaranteed for four years.

Should you upgrade if you have a Galaxy A52 5G?

Overall, the Galaxy A53 5G offers faster performance, longer software support, and longer battery life. If these are the features you’re looking for, then it’s worth moving from the Galaxy A52 5G to the Galaxy A53 5G. If you were hoping for major camera improvements, you may be disappointed now. Are you attached to the 3.5mm audio jack? Then it is better to stick with the A52 5G.

If you’re coming from a Galaxy A51, the Galaxy A53 5G will be a huge upgrade over your current phone. Then of course there is the price. For the Galaxy A53 5G you pay 20 euros more for the same memory variant. And now there is also a version with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. It costs 509 euros. The Galaxy A52 5G, on the other hand, has now dropped a lot in price. This phone goes from 429 euros to about 399 euros.
