Samsung and Xiaomi don’t stand a chance

Although Huawei is under the US ban and has to live with severe restrictions, this does not stop the Chinese company from developing and patenting important technologies. The competition can’t keep up.

Huawei leads 5G patents

Although Huawei has been under the US ban for a long time and thus has little access to 5G technologies, the Chinese company still manages to 5G patents with 14.59 percent uncatchable in first place to stay. Qualcomm (10.04 percent) and Samsung (8.80 percent) are in second and third place, some way behind. They lag far behind the Chinese manufacturer (source: mydrivers).

Xiaomi invests according to the information more and more in 5G technologies and lands in the top 10 for the first time. The Chinese company is also apparently trying to invalidate several Huawei patents that have already been granted. Other manufacturers such as ZTE, LG, Nokia, Ericsson, Datang and Oppo are also in the top 10.

This is currently a difficult situation for Huawei, because although the Chinese company owns many 5G patents and technology dominates with it, it can do not use them in smartphones themselves, without having to access US technologies. Accordingly, modern Huawei smartphones lack a 5G modem. But Huawei scores with the infrastructure and tries to remain active in countries like Germany. But there is also increasing headwind from the EU.

Huawei wants to become more independent

Since the US ban, Huawei has wanted to become more independent of US technologies and is also investing a lot of money to achieve this. However, modern technologies cannot simply be copied and used so quickly without infringing on US patents. That’s why Huawei devices still lack 5G modules.
