As many models as possible and at reasonable prices? That was actually Xiaomi’s secret recipe, but suddenly it doesn’t work anymore. The company, spoiled by success, has to accept a bitter defeat. Samsung and Apple, on the other hand, can look forward to high sales figures.

Xiaomi falls back to third place

Xiaomi was actually well on the way to establishing itself as the second largest smartphone manufacturer. But in the second quarter of 2022, Xiaomi failed to meet expectations. The Chinese manufacturer has dropped to third place. Xiaomi was only able to claim a 14 percent share of the smartphone market, which fell by 9 percent overall. In the same period last year, it was 17 percent and second place.

Not only Xiaomi lost, but all well-known Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Oppo and Vivo. With Oppo it’s even worse, because Canalys has taken OnePlus into account. Nevertheless, the market share has fallen from 11 to just 10 percent – with generally lower sales figures for the entire smartphone market. So the Chinese smartphone manufacturers have been hit really hard.

Samsung remains unchanged in first place. The market share increases from 18 to 21 percent. Apple can also increase its market share from 14 to 17 percent. With this, Apple overtakes Xiaomi again and restores the old order.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra should increase sales:

Entire smartphone industry needs improvement

Even if Samsung and Apple were able to increase their market shares, the overall market has fallen significantly, so that not much has changed in terms of concrete sales figures. So the entire smartphone industry has to come up with something to get sales up again. So it will be interesting to see how the business develops over the next few months.
