Revamped News, Google TV, and Stock widgets for Android

Android is getting new widgets this summer. At least, renewed widgets for three topics: news, Google TV and stocks. We already wrote about the new tiles coming to Wear OS yesterday: now we’re going to talk about innovations coming to the phones and tablets.

Revamped widgets

For example, you can get all kinds of recommendations with the new widget for Google TV: the widget points you to new films and series that are available and might be something for you. You can scroll through the suggestions and there are links to search further, plus the remote control at the top.

If you are completely into shares and would like to keep an eye on them more often, you can see exactly how your shares are doing in the new shares widget. This information is fed by Google Finance. Would you rather just know the news? Also possible: the Google News widget gets a Material You makeover in the form of a new bottom bar and tablet optimizations. You read it already: these are mainly adjustments that come into their own on larger screens.

Lock screens

It is striking that widgets, home screens and lock screens have been getting a lot of attention lately. Something that may have been deployed somewhat by Apple overhauling its lock screen in a pretty phenomenal way. These are welcome adjustments: after all, the faster you have insight into news, stocks or other notifications, the less time you spend on your phone, opening apps, and so on.

If you want to know what will change on Wear OS, we recommend that you read our article about it. Spoiler: in any case, it concerns Spotify and Google Keep that get new tiles on the wearables that run on this operating system.

When the updated widgets will come to the smartphone and tablet, that is still unknown. It will be sometime this summer.
