Research: “We spend 1/3 of the day on our phone”

A study shows that we spend about a third of our ‘wake day’ on our phone.

Your smartphone can do everything. Calling, messaging, surfing the web, socializing and of course much more. Because it’s such a big part of our lives, we use it a lot. So far no surprises.

Research phone use

We use the term ‘we’ because according to research people use their digital friend a lot. The survey, conducted by the Annie app, recorded how much we were on our phones in 2021. That’s an average of 4.8 hours a day. Converted about a third of the total time we are awake.

Popular apps

It seems logical which apps are responsible for this smartphone dominance. Think of apps like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and the like, which claimed about 70 percent of the attention. We also spent a lot in those apps: 170 billion dollars in total, with an expenditure of 320,000 dollars worldwide per minute. Small amounts!

The research takes an average of everything, of course, but outliers in terms of frequent users can be found in Brazil and Indonesia. They spent an average of 5.4 hours a day on their phones. Perhaps one of the most important numbers: this number of hours is a 30 percent increase compared to the same survey in 2019.

So it’s no surprise that we spend a lot of time on our phone, but that’s how bad it is according to this research. (via Annie)
