Replacing the iPhone 13 screen will cost your Face ID

A bug, or of course a cunning way to make extra money. You can’t replace the screen of your iPhone 13 and keep Face ID, one way or another.

Apple seems more and more wanting to make sure people stay out of their phones. By that we mean that you remove the back yourself and replace parts like a handy Harry. Apple has built into the software that recognizes the phone when you install parts that do not have an Apple certificate. In order not to make life difficult for repair shops, you can therefore replace parts, but with original or certified parts. They are expensive and then the money ends up directly with Apple.

New find

A new find by iFixit can also be shoved into this remarkable corner. They had already taken apart an iPhone 13, but now there is a large web page with everything you need to know. Under the heading where they talk about Face ID, it all seems to be good news. Apple has separated the screen and the Face ID module from each other, so you can easily replace the display without having to believe your Face ID module.

Face ID after screen replacement

At least, on paper. iFixit did find a problem with the screen replacement. When the screen was replaced, there was no longer any functionality for Face ID. According to iFixit, the screen is ‘serial locked’ on the phone, so you can only use the original screen with Face ID. Sounds plausible, we’re talking about Apple.

Apple screen

Especially when you hear that there is a solution: you can have the screen replaced with Face ID, if you have it done at an Apple repair center and with an original Apple screen. The well-known way. There is still some talk that this may be a bug, as there is not a notification that the phone recognizes a non-original screen like other repairs.

So let’s keep it nice and simple: just keep your screen intact. Saves a lot of hassle and money. (via iFixit)
