Publisher jumps aside Game Pass
PlayStation took a sharp swipe at Xbox Game Pass this week, claiming the service is unpopular with all publishers. A studio is now publicly opposing Sony in this regard.
Update from June 30, 2023:
Publisher Sports Interactive manager has vehemently contradicted PlayStation boss Jim Ryan – his company, which is responsible for the Football Manager series, have been extremely happy with Xbox Game Pass. This applies to both the subscription on the consoles and on the PC. Miles Jacobson stated that the Game Pass experience has been very positive for his studio, although this can certainly vary from publisher to publisher. (Source: Eurogamer)
However, this statement alone refutes Ryan’s generalized claim that all publishers have a negative image from the Xbox subscriptions service.
Original report from June 28, 2023:
At a court hearing in the lawsuit between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission in the United States PlayStation boss Jim Ryan gives his take on Xbox Game Pass stated and did not hold back. According to Ryan, the subscription service is unanimously unpopular with all publishers in the industry.
Xbox Game Pass unpopular? PlayStation boss pulls from the leather
The process between Microsoft and the FTC revolves around whether Got the green light for Activision’s acquisition by Xbox should or not. Shortly after announcing the deal in January 2022, Ryan held an investor meeting that he is now scheduled to recount at hearing. He confirmed his statement that Microsoft wanted to buy Activision primarily because of the Game Pass.
He also heard unanimously from all publishers that that Game Pass is unpopular with them – because the subscription service is perceived as value-destroying. When asked if he actually spoke to all publishers, Ryan did not back down from his statement. (Source: VGC)

Game Pass: Is criticism of the Xbox subscription justified?
Whether the majority of publishers actually consider Xbox Game Pass to be value-destroying is impossible to prove. However, it cannot be said that the subscription service has an exclusively bad reputation in the industry, because in the past there have been several studios have commented positively on the service – including indie developers like Wishfully (Planet of Lana) and No More Robots (Descenders), as well as High-on-Life creator Justin Roiland. As a positive aspect, these studios highlight that the Xbox Game Pass would have offered their game a much larger stage – and it subsequently sold better. Nevertheless, it cannot be ruled out that some publishers will not agree with the offered Game Pass deals that Xbox is proposing to them. A unanimous rejection, which PlayStations Jim Ryan assumes, cannot be determined on this basis.
