Production start in Gigafactory Berlin is further delayed

It has been some time since Tesla decided to build a gigafactory in Germany. Huge halls were to be built just outside Berlin and production started this year. But since then the official start of production has been delayed more and more, most recently only from the end of 2021.

Another necessary formality shows that it could be pretty tight this year: The online survey of residents near the factory must take place again, everyone can express their concerns and worries here. The reason is an objection from environmental associations.

The first round of questions took place last year, now another one is to take place between November 2nd and 22nd inclusive. Once all concerns have been taken up, they still have to be examined, so approval can only be expected at the end of December at the earliest.

It should start soon in Brandenburg

Of course, this can only work if there are no further objections that must first be examined more closely. Then the approval process could be extended by a further few weeks. So it’s not going quite the way Elon Musk had in mind. At the Gigafest, the CEO announced that production would start in November.

With the bureaucratic hurdles and the upcoming Christmas season, it remains to be seen whether Tesla can actually start in the last weeks of December. It is therefore likely that the tapes will start rolling in 2022 at the earliest.

Own opinion:

That a major project near Berlin is being delayed should sound familiar to many. New company buildings and production lines in Germany are always faced with major bureaucracy hurdles, but in my opinion the process still makes sense. After all, the mistrust in the population cannot be neglected, so a non-contestable process should also play into Tesla’s cards.
