Prime Video delayed publishing reviews to fight spam

With its Prime Video streaming service, Amazon has built up one of the most popular VoD offerings in the world in recent years. Now a new tactic in the fight against spam reviews should help.

On September 2nd, Amazon released the series “The Rings of Power” on its Prime Video streaming platform. Only 24 hours later it is clear: The series from the “Lord of the Rings” universe has come along 25 million viewers worldwide made a record start. Because never before has a series been able to celebrate such a premiere on the streaming service.

But where there is such a large crowd of people, spam is not far away – as is so often the case on the Internet. In order to curb this, at least in the case of film and series reviews, Amazon has come up with a new strategy how Variety reported.

Prime Video declares war on spam reviews

Reviews on Prime Video no longer appear immediately. Because Amazon has introduced a time delay in the fight against spam comments.

In the future, the streaming service will only publish user reviews 72 hours later. In the meantime, these can be checked for authenticity.

The change has Amazon according to Variety introduced “quietly”. It is said to have been in effect since the August 12th launch of baseball dramedy A League of Their Own. A representative of the streaming provider has the new procedure Variety approved.

Amazon wants to ensure that the published reviews are not fake, for example by bots.

What does The Rings of Power series have to do with it?

The new practice was noticed during the premiere of the new “Lord of the Rings” series. The series has sometimes faced negative reviews.

reason is loud Variety the decision to also use colored actors for the roles of elves, dwarfs or harfeet. For months, the series has been fighting against trolls who are bothering it.

This is for example also on the Rotten Tomatoes review website recognizable. Because while the new series “The Rings of Power” gets an 84 percent rating from professional critics, it only gets 39 percent from users.

There are no reviews for the new series available on Amazon itself yet. It will probably only become clear in the coming days whether Prime Video’s delay tactics will work.
