Sony only recently came up with PlayStation Directbrought a new way of ordering a PS5 into play. The online shop, which was previously only available in the USA, is now also online in Germany. However, the PS5 is currently sold out there too.
PlayStation 5 availability: The current situation
The PlayStation 5 is still not widely available, although the sales start already took place in November 2020. In the last few weeks there have been at least occasional “drops” in which the console was available several times in limited contingents for a short time (usually only minutes) from various online retailers. The last time there were a few copies of the disc version was on September 23rd. at Saturn and MediaMarkt – unfortunately these are already sold out. If you want to increase your chances of getting the PS5 in retail sales, you should keep an eye on the following dealers and grab them quickly if necessary.

The version with drive may cost 100 euros more, but is recommended for PlayStation fans who have a large library of PS4 games on discs and want to continue using them. The PS5 disc version can also be used to play Blu-Rays and 4K Blu-Rays.
PlayStation 5 All-Digital Edition for 399 euros
With the all-digital edition of the PS5 you are limited to games that you buy from the PlayStation Store. If you don’t have a large game collection and don’t plan to build one or play mostly free-2-play titles like Fortnite or CoD: Warzone, you can access it here. This saves 100 euros and gives you a slightly slimmer console.
PS5 on the gray market – on eBay
A big problem with the availability of the PS5 is the so-called scalper. These are bots that continuously scan shop pages and buy consoles as soon as they are available. The bot operators want to continue buying consoles on trading platforms such as eBay at a profit thanks to the artificial shortage. While the method seems morally questionable, buying the console at a premium on eBay is of course an option. We recommend, however, to study the offers carefully for the seriousness of the dealers, origin of the hardware, guarantee / warranty and delivery date.
The eBay prices indirectly provide an impression of the relationship between supply and demand. We keep a close eye on eBay prices, several times a week we determine the best price from reputable eBay dealers for consoles with the status “new” and “buy it now” option that are available from Germany. From this it can be deduced how far the PlayStation 5 is still from availability in terms of breadth. Here prices have recently picked up again. While the PS5 with disc drive was still being traded for 650 euros in August, the cheapest prices are currently well over 700 euros again. The PS5 without an optical drive costs around 670 euros again, while it was still available for 550 euros in late summer. That corresponds to surcharges of 40 to 70 percent compared to the RRP – pure usury! Unfortunately, scalping still seems to be worth it.
