Policy agrees on price

The struggle for a successor to the 9-euro ticket has a first interim result. After negotiations, the transport ministers of the federal and state governments have agreed on a price. Although it is higher than the original, the new saver ticket is not quite as expensive as feared.

An impressive figure: the 9-euro ticket was sold 52 million times between June and August. The 9-euro ticket was a complete success in its short life and cleared the jungle of transport associations and tariff zones. Big footsteps that the successor has to fill. After the transport ministers’ conference of the federal and state governments, it is taking on ever clearer forms.

The 9-euro ticket successor should cost 49 euros a month

Perhaps the most important detail has now been clarified: the price. Of the should amount to 49 euros per monthaccording to politicians (source: daily News). “In agreement with the federal government, the conference of transport ministers holds an introductory price of 49 euros per month in a monthly subscription for a possible offer,” says the decision paper.

49 euros per month is far more than the 9 euros that the original cost in the summer of 2022. Recently, however, there was also talk of a price of 69 euros per month. It seems off the table now.

now the ball lies with the federal states. From 2023, the federal government wants to make 1.5 billion euros available annually to finance a follow-up solution for the 9-euro ticket. The federal states should provide the same amount. So far, however, they have been blocking themselves and are demanding higher regionalization funds in order to be able to better finance local transport.

Introduction may be delayed

Whether and when a 49-euro ticket will be introduced is likely a conference of prime ministers will ultimately decide. Most recently, however, the country heads could not agree on financial issues with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. So the impasse continues and an introduction on January 1, 2023, as many hoped, could be delayed.
