PlayStation locked out: Xbox boss shows no mercy

Xbox and PlayStation have been fighting for the throne for more than 20 years. The exclusive games for the consoles are decisive. Internal chats now reveal that Microsoft can be tough on this one too.

Only on Xbox and PC: PlayStation has to do without these games

The Acquisition of Activision Blizzard currently brings a lot of interesting information to light about the internal machinations of Xbox manufacturer Microsoft and PlayStation manufacturer Sony. Chat messages have now surfaced between CFO Tim Stuart and Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty during the negotiations. They reveal that Xbox boss Phil Spencer decided back in November 2021 to only release all ZeniMax games on Xbox and PC.

ZeniMax was acquired by Microsoft in March 2021. For gamers, the company appears as the parent company of Bethesda. In the internal messages, Stuart is surprised that not only new brands, but really all games have to do without the PlayStation. Without the Sony consoles, the two also anticipate profit margin issues (source: IGN).

No matter what platform. July has some great games to offer:

Microsoft isn’t that squeamish

The announcement of the exclusive Bethesda games doesn’t seem like much of a surprise at first. After all, Starfield will not appear on the PlayStation either. However, in the past Microsoft has always held back from making major decisions about the future of Bethesda to announce. Before the takeover was completed, Spencer said he didn’t want to take games away from players on other platforms.

Even recently, the Xbox boss still wanted no final statement to determine if The Elder Scrolls 6 will be released on the PlayStation. If you believe the internal news, this decision was made years ago.

By the way, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is not a fan of console exclusivity. In the interview he explains that he would do without it completely if it were up to him. However, Sony would dominate the market with exclusive games, which is why it has no decision-making power (source: The Verge).

It looks like Bethesda games will continue to only appear on Xbox and PC in the future. That’s perfectly fine too. Exclusive games have been deciding which consoles people buy for many years and Sony, after all, is playing the exact same game.

However, Microsoft probably doesn’t want to admit this fact itself and prefers to present itself as a blank slate that doesn’t like exclusive games at all and is only forced to do so by Sony anyway. Who should believe that from a company that has been in the console market for more than 20 years. So Microsoft, admit that you want to watch games on Xbox, not PlayStation. You’re not that squeamish internally either.
