Players turn away – Sony shrugs
Although the PS5 is arguably the most sought-after console on the market right now, the number of PS Plus members is shrinking. Sony is calm, but what is the reason for the loss of players?
The PlayStation 5 is a resounding sales success, but not everything is going as expected at Sony: The number of active players and PS Plus members has recently decreased significantly. The Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki is not yet particularly impressed and urges calm.
PS Plus: Members turn their backs on service
Sony published the figures for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2021. It was noticeable that the number of PS-Plus members compared to the fourth quarter of 2020 fell from 47.6 million to 46.3 million – 1.3 million players have given the service the pass.
In addition, there were significantly fewer active PlayStation players in June: In June 2020 there were 114 million gamers, In 2021, on the other hand, with 104 million, around 10 million less. (Source: Resetera)
Sony is not worried about fewer PS Plus subscribers
Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki shared the latest player numbers in a webcast. Totoki said that while 104 million gamers is not a good value, but currently no trend can be seenthat should cause concern. Rather, it is due to the unnaturally high number of players during the lockdown months. Of course, Sony wants to continue to monitor the situation. (Source: VGC)
So, unfortunately, we can currently only speculate what could be the cause of the drop in players. Gamers may not have been satisfied with the free games during the quarter and have therefore canceled their PS Plus subscription. Or maybe the Xbox Game Pass poached some members. The next financial reports may provide more information in this regard.
