The majority of Androidworld readers want to protect their phone with an extra sturdy case or opt for a rugged phone. For only 35%, a lighter case or no protection at all will suffice.

Smartphone protection is becoming increasingly important, as it turns out. With phones lasting longer thanks to powerful hardware and better software support, we see smartphone users putting more effort into physically protecting their phones as well.
30.8% of the readers who voted in our poll indicate that their phone needs protection in the form of an extra sturdy case. An exactly equal number of people, again 30.8%, say they are interested in rugged devices. We see that more and more brands are entering this market. First Motorola with the Defy, a device that we could already extensively test, and now also Nokia.
Advantages of rugged
Only 35% say that special protection is not necessary. They use a lighter case or no case at all. It is usually people who practice heavy professions or intensive hobbies who turn to rugged devices or extra powerful cases.
Such a strong case already helps to absorb most shocks, but rugged phones go even further. They protect against extreme temperature fluctuations, dust and water. In addition, they often come with special functions such as a thermal camera or extra buttons that you can link to actions of your choice. What protection do you need for your phone?
