phone cases are a must for phone lovers

Our editors share a lot in common: a heightened interest in Android and a great need to race their fingers across keyboards. But, that doesn’t mean they always agree. In AW Discussion Thursday we put each other to the test with a statement every week. This week we’re talking about cases.

Laura: Kinda Coral, Sorta Seafoam: I’m fine with the fun names of colors on some phones. Or actually on colorful phones at all. What do you think, should phones only come out in black and white or should it be a bit more rainbow?

Jelle: I always say this: a smartphone with a beautiful color and radiant light is already a beautiful gadget from the first glance

Laura: But isn’t it actually a bit pointless, because we always put a cover over it anyway?

Jelle: Cases? sorry what? You shouldn’t do covers anyway, ugly (!).

Laura: Do you use your phone naked? As in: without protection? 😮

Jelle: Certainly! A screen protector, but certainly not a case. I really think these are all ugly and a waste of the design of your smartphone, which the manufacturer has sometimes put a lot of work into. In addition, many smartphones are made of premium materials. Then you don’t put a sickening plastic cover around it, do you?

Laura: I do not agree with you: I find a gigantic dent in my phone just that little bit uglier. Plus: you also have covers that are transparent, don’t you?

Jelle: Cases that are transparent are not pretty! In addition, in people who use them, they are often no longer transparent within a few weeks. They then become a messy yellow (Jelle is nauseous).

Laura: Usually safety is not pretty, but it is.. safe. And yes, that is not very nice, but you can prevent that in itself by cleaning them. Moreover, they not only protect the phone against falls, but also extra well against dust, which will come in handy once we get replaceable batteries in devices again.

Jelle: You don’t wrap your car in bubble wrap, do you?

Laura: I don’t have a car, but I would love it: all those bangs every time the wheel turns!

Jelle: Just be careful with it, what moves people to make a beautiful design smartphone ugly…

Laura: Have you never had a phone crash before? Put in the same pocket as your keys?

Jelle: I have no active memory of that. And no, keys in another pocket. That’s how it can be, just think about it and enjoy the design.

Laura: I don’t like it, they are much too slippery and then slide off the couch. [denkt met tranen in haar ogen terug] I just had my OnePlus for a week… Anyway: so you don’t have a Popsocket on your phone, or any other extra grip mechanism?

Jelle: Ew no! Anyway, people who pack their beautiful smartphone in a plastic case, have fun. I really think it’s a shame and unnecessary, Gorilla Glass protects against many falls and cracks, and you can prevent scratches. So put the key in the other pocket and use a screen protector. But yes, people who use a case make the smartphone cases manufacturers laugh again. At least they are happy with them.

Laura: Yes, I also use a screen protector, on top of that. I find a case useful, just a little more grip, even when you hold the device. Handy, that those devices are all getting thinner, but with those large Dutch claws, a bit more body is desirable. But you don’t like covers that also function as a wallet? Or that you need to open to help protect your privacy?

Jelle: No, they don’t, they get nice and thick, very nice… But don’t you think it’s a disadvantage if an expensive smartphone like the S23 Ultra is made of plastic? Or does that not matter to you?

Laura: No, I don’t really care. But I often use review models without a cover, so I experience it more like those real purists like you. But it makes me very nervous: what if he falls? I always put them in a washcloth in my purse

Jelle: Nooooo really hahahah😅

Laura: hihi yes, it also stays clean immediately!

Jelle: But a smartphone is a utensil.

Laura: I prefer to take it a little longer, because I know myself. Can you send me some of that bubble wrap?

Jelle: Phone cases are ugly, that’s what I think. They make your phone a lot less beautiful, so think about it before you start.
