patent confirms completely new function

The Apple Watch Series 8 will be presented in a month. According to rumors, it will get an extra accurate temperature sensor. A recently surfaced patent confirms this.

Patent for Accurate Temperature Sensor in Apple Watch Series 8

Apple was awarded an exciting patent, discovered MyHealthApple. The company has US Trademark and Patent Office applied for a patent called ‘Temperature gradient sensing in electronic devices’.

In principle, this can be a sensor that is used in all kinds of different products. However, the accompanying drawings clearly show an Apple Watch. It is therefore likely that Apple wants to place this sensor in the Apple Watch Series 8.

Apple’s patent concerns a housing for an electronic device that contains a temperature measurement system. It consists of a temperature sensor and a temperature difference meter. The latter calculates the difference between two ends of a probe. One end makes contact with the surface to be measured, while the other is connected to the temperature sensor. A so-called differential temperature measurement can be performed via the voltage difference at the two ends of the probe. This is extra accurate compared to a regular thermometer.

The patent in detail

As usual, the patent for the Apple Watch Series 8 is very complicated. Apple describes its temperature sensor as follows:

The temperature probe is configured to generate a voltage corresponding to the temperature variation between the first end of the probe and the second end of the probe. The temperature probe can be placed in an electronic device housing.

The first end of the probe is coupled to the temperature sensor and the second end of the probe to any suitable surface, internal or external, of the electronic device. In this construction, the temperature sensor can be configured to measure a temperature of any surface or volume to which the sensor is exposed.

Apple further explains in more detail how the temperature measurement works. In addition, the company specifically mentions that the external probe can be placed on the back of a device, such as the back of the Apple Watch Series 8. Furthermore, Apple indicates that the system works very accurately.

Temperature sensor in Apple Watch Series 8 is almost certain

Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and Wall Street Journal indicated that Apple is giving the Apple Watch Series 8 a sensor to measure temperature. This can detect, among other things, whether a user has a fever. He can also determine the fertile (or infertile) days in women and map your sleeping behavior better.
