Parking soon unpayable? Environmental aid calls for a hefty surcharge

The German Environmental Aid wants to ask motorists in cities to pay – and not too tight. The larger the vehicle in question, the more expensive the parking facility for residents should be. It’s hundreds of euros a year.

Environmental help: Resident parking must cost at least 360 euros

Parking for residents should become significantly more expensive if the German Environmental Aid (DUH) has its way. While drivers in some German cities only have to pay a few euros a year, the association demands hefty minimum of 360 euros, nationwide.

The reason: “Every year the number of cars registered in Germany increases by half a million. Simultaneously the registered cars are getting longer, wider and heavier. Nevertheless, residents in most cities are allowed to deliver public space with their huge SUVs and pick-ups for just eight cents a day,” explains Jürgen Resch, Federal Managing Director of the DUH (source: daily News).

The environmental association does not just want to make big gas guzzlers less attractive in cities or to force the switch to electric cars. Because a staggering according to the type of drive is by no means intended. Instead, they want to support the mobility change completely away from the car. To demand “reasonable prices” is an “important thing Instrument to reduce the number of cars in cities“, says Robin Kulka, DUH traffic officer.

Low fees, on the other hand, would slow down the turnaround in mobility. The cost of parking for residents should therefore be so high that those affected should think about it to give up the car completely if they don’t need it.

Whether e-car or combustion engine: Large cars should be more expensive

The demand is initially only that, a demand. But in many places are the signs that this will happen. The statutory upper limit of EUR 30.70 per year was already abolished in 2020. Since then, several federal states have given municipalities the freedom to determine the level of local prices themselves.

Freiburg is a role model for the DUH. An average fee of 360 euros per year is planned there. For particularly large SUVs, for example, up to 480 euros could be estimated.
