The big advantage of the AirPods is that you can effortlessly connect them to your new iPhone, iPad and Mac. We explain how the AirPods pairing works, regardless of the device you want to connect to.

Pair AirPods with all your devices
Apple’s AirPods have been a great success for years. There are now several models to choose from. Apple currently sells the AirPods 2nd generation, AirPods 3rd generation, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Enough choice, then. But how do you actually connect your new wireless headset to your iPhone, iPad or Mac?
Since AirPods support iCloud, it’s very easy to automatically connect them to all devices associated with your iCloud account. So you can start listening right away on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.
You simply open the case of your AirPods and hold it next to your iPhone, iPad or Mac. An animated pop-up will appear, with which you can connect the AirPods to your device in a few simple steps. The earphones are then automatically linked to all devices that are linked to your iCloud account.
The AirPods Max headphones come in a case just like the AirPods (Pro), but they don’t work quite the same. You have to remove the AirPods Max from the case to pair the headset. Just opening the case is not enough.
No popup? Do not panic!
Can’t see the popup on your device after opening your AirPods case? You can still pair your AirPods in the next four steps. The steps also work for older Apple devices or, for example, Android smartphones and Windows computers.
- Make sure the AirPods are in their case.
- Open the case without leaving the AirPods out.
- Press the small circular button on the back of the case until the LED light inside the case turns white and starts blinking.
- On your device, find the AirPods via the Bluetooth menu and pair them like you pair other Bluetooth devices.
Once the AirPods are paired with all your devices, you don’t have to worry about connecting. As soon as you open the box of your AirPods, the earphones will automatically connect to the device you are currently using.
AirPods are clearly developed for Apple devices, but with the above step-by-step plan you can also simply connect them to an Android smartphone or tablet. Keep in mind that you can of course not operate Siri at that time, since it is not present on the paired device.
