OnePlus 10 Pro review: It’s not missing much…

OnePlus obliges, the device is a real treat for the eyes with a frosted glass back that is very pleasant in the hand with the immense advantage of not leaving traces of kebab fat on the back. The photo island looks a bit like an “induction hob”, but the finishes are impeccable. We have the impression that the device is made of a single block with an aluminum rim and a slightly curved screen so as not to interfere with handling. Be careful, it is not intended for small hands and it is slightly slippery: even if the screen is “Gorilla Glass Victus”, it would be negligent to drop it. We find the small “slider” switch on the side, very practical to switch your OnePlus to silent or vibrate without going through the menus. The device is water resistant, but as in 2020 with the OnePlus 8 Pro, the manufacturer did not want to pay for certification. We will therefore be careful not to immerse it in beer.

No jack, but good stereo sound that doesn’t stand out more than that. The good surprise is that in the box you will find the charging block compatible with the machine, but we will come back to this later. No microSD slot to inflate the storage, so you will have to be satisfied with 128 or 256 GB of flash memory to house the photos of your cats. On the OS side, it’s an Android 12 (version 13 should come out in the next few weeks on this model) with the OxygenOS 12 overlay which is not doing itself a favor by merging little by little with that of cousin Oppo. In terms of price, we are on the same ranges as last year with an 8+128 GB at €919 and a 12+256 GB at €999. Of course, as it’s been 4 months since it was released, we can now touch them at around 750 €, which is still not cheap either.

The best screen of the moment?

As usual from OnePlus, the screen is very neat. It displays a definition of 2412 x 1080 pixels by default, but you can switch to QHD+ (3216 x 1440) by taking a look in the settings. The 6.7-inch (17 cm) LTPO AMOLED panel offers adaptive refreshment up to 120 Hz. Thanks to OxygenOS, we can adjust the colorimetry as we see fit and the option Natural tones will adjust this parameter in real time according to the lighting. The light sensor is very responsive. The screen of this OnePlus 10 Pro is clearly one of its strengths.

As for the power of the machine, it is clearly the top of the basket in 2022 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 backed by 8 or 12 GB of RAM. On the other hand, it’s the same concern as with other devices equipped with the same chip: it heats up a little in prolonged use and the performance does not outperform last year’s chip (Snapdragon 888). We cap a little at Qualcomm, but this is the case with all competitors equipped with the same SoC.

A complete photo set, but from last year…

In this segment, we will of course find an ultra wide-angle and a telephoto lens in addition to the main module. The latter is a 48-megapixel Sony IMX789 which was already present on the OnePlus 9 Pro. The lens is very good with well-respected colors and not too much software processing, but this is last year’s sensor. In short, it’s good, but without surprise. Note that the night mode is a little more “worked”. The shots are of good quality, with or without an artificial light source. The 48 MP mode adds more detail to your photos: we advise you to use this option for bright shots. As usual, OnePlus offers a lot of “Pro” features and a rather efficient RAW mode recording.

The ultra-wide-angle module, the 50-megapixel Samsung Isocell JN1 captures 12.5 megapixels by default. Here, we didn’t see any big differences between the two modes. The shots are a little dull, but with very little distortion. This can be seen particularly in the indoor shots: it’s successful, but it was already the case last year. The only novelty is this mode with a 150° viewing angle which is a bit “fisheye”: funny.

Finally, as a telephoto lens, we have the right to a somewhat “light” 8 MP sensor which allows you to zoom up to x3.3. Note that in broad daylight with good conditions, it will be able to capture very suitable shots in x10. If this module is not up to that of the Pixel 6 Pro, it does its job perfectly. Of course, the lower the light, the harder it will be to get a clean shot, but the optical stabilization works wonders here.

As for selfies, it’s very good with a 32 MP module that respects colors and skin tone. The portrait mode outlines faces very well with a bokeh that is not at all artificial. Our model is almost beautiful: it’s a real feat. Finally, the video heats up the smartphone, but we will forgive this weakness since the 4K rendering at 120 fps with OIS is excellent (especially since the optical stabilization is also required in telephoto mode). A success !

Not very durable, but very fast to recharge!

The “Pro” versions are rarely durable at OnePlus and this is still the case here, even with a 5000 mAh battery. This is not an eliminatory aspect however since even in sustained use, we will still last a day. Phew. The device also manages thanks to its 80W SuperVOOC fast charge which allows you to go from 2% to 100% in 35 minutes (and from 22 to 95% in 22 minutes). The OnePlus 10 Pro is also compatible with AirVOOC 50W wireless charging (from 5% to 100% in 45 minutes with the compatible charger) and with reverse charging.

Our Verdict:

The OnePlus 10 Pro is clearly a high-end device with a lot of qualities, but at this price we expected more: the photo part has not changed much since the OnePlus 9 Pro of 2021, it does not have IP68 certification and it is a little light in terms of autonomy. It makes up for it with its lightning-fast charging, flawless screen and very good performance. If you like the brand and are willing to shell out €900, you won’t be disappointed. The others will prefer a Pixel 6 or a top-of-the-range Xiaomi, all cheaper.
