‘Omikron variant of coronavirus also milder for pregnant women’
“We will continue to monitor, but it seems that omikron is also milder for pregnant women. We now hear almost nothing, not even about IC recordings or emergency caesarean sections,” Gynecologist Sam Schoenmakers of Erasmus MC told RTL Nieuws.

Schoenmakers warned in November last year that a corona infection can cause serious damage to the placenta in exceptional cases: researchers from Erasmus MC were able to link thirteen stillbirths in recent months to this.

Fewer Nutrients
The mothers’ placentas were damaged by the coronavirus, which meant that the child received less nutrients and oxygen. “It now seems that when the coronavirus enters the bloodstream from the lungs, an infection in the placenta can occur,” Schoenmakers told de Volkskrant at the time.
