Office workers at the post office are supposed to help out as deliverers

Opposite to picture on sunday Thomas Schneider, head of operations for the post and parcel business in Germany, acknowledged the current delays in some deliveries. However, he also assured:

We still deliver more than 80 percent of all letters on the next working day and over 95 percent within two days.

According to Schneider, due to the large number of corona infections, “rows” of operating sites have meanwhile failed. In addition, numerous employees who accepted a job at the post office due to the lockdown returned to their previous jobs.

The company has “hired over 300 new delivery workers in the last four weeks,” as Schneider told the RP. However, in view of the upcoming Christmas business, the staffing level is still thin.

Office workers to help with Christmas deliveries

According to the daily newspaper, board member Nikola Hagleitner has meanwhile called for supervisors and office workers to help out in production for around a week, if possible. It has been common practice for years for administrative staff to step in for deliveries or in the distribution centers in the run-up to Christmas.

However, in the past it was only a day or two. When asked by RP, the Post explained that the company traditionally appeals to the administrative staff to help with the delivery. But the use is voluntary. Due to the current shortage of staff, the board also announced that it would hire mail carriers from abroad.
