“It was difficult, we lost”

Motorola kicks off its Edge 20 flagships, and then it’s time to sit down again with Lenovo’s subsidiary brand. Are the flagships important to Motorola, and what can we expect from them?

Edge 20 Series

Motorola recently launched its Edge 20 series. The brand released two midrange devices and a flagship with the Edge 20 Pro that managed to push the price more compared to the Edge Plus last year. The device promises with a high-quality screen, powerful specifications and a periscope camera for 5x optical zoom.

Motorola is mostly known to consumers for its low and mid-range devices, but it wants to change that impression. “Flagships are necessary for the story of your brand and of course we do not only want to be known for our midrange devices, but we want to be able to offer a device for every consumer,” Ruben Weenink told Androidworld. He is general manager Mobile Business Group at Lenovo Benelux.

You can invest again

According to Weenink, Motorola not only focused on strong camera hardware, but also worked hard on the software. In our reviews you often read that the software behind Motorola’s cameras is lagging behind. It keeps the brand from playing with the ‘big boys’ who release flagships. So the brand invested and took 200 new software engineers under its wing to help improve image processing. It has sometimes been different.

“Motorola was acquired by Lenovo six years ago, and while we got off to a promising start, two years ago it was quite difficult. We made a loss, and all your loss makes you still invest in R&D, but it’s harder than if you is growing. Unfortunately, there have also been redundancies. Those times are now behind us and we can invest fully again.”

Motorola is convinced that the camera of the Edge 20 Pro will compete well with other top devices from other brands. The manufacturer also underlines the 144 Hz screen, the Snapdragon 870 and the price tag as assets. On Friday, Motorola also announced that the Edge 20 and Edge 20 Lite can enjoy three years of security updates.
