Off secured for a 9-euro ticket? Minister of Transport leaves no questions unanswered

The 9 euro ticket is coming to an end. Then it’s time to put an end to the nationwide cheap tariff for buses and trains. Suggestions for follow-up offers are already piling up. But Transport Minister Wissing dismisses the idea: The federal government no longer wants to have anything to do financially with the 9-euro ticket.

Successor to the 9-euro ticket: there is not a cent from the federal government

It was the biggest hurdle for the 9-euro ticket and will also be the most important question to be answered for a successor: Who pays that? For the three months alone, in which the 9-euro ticket enables us to travel cheaply in local and regional transport, 2.5 billion euros were expected.

The federal government does not see itself as a donor for a follow-up offer. Public transport and the design of prices and tariffs are a matter for the federal states, explained Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing to the ARD morning magazine (source: time). Corresponding the countries would have to see “how they want to finance it”.

For consumers, however, problems will arise with this announcement: If the federal government stays out of the financing, this will be reflected in the price. So far there have been many suggestions as to how to proceed – they all are more expensive: A 29-euro ticket or a 69-euro ticket for one month has already been introduced. CSU boss Markus Söder would rather have an annual ticket for 365 euros.

From 9 to 69 euros a month would be a big jump, but at least the transport companies favor it. An annual ticket for 1 euro per day sounds good, but it’s not worth it if you only need it for a month or two.

Uncertainty about the 9-euro ticket: will the successor be a toothless tiger?

But what does it mean when the federal government stays out? According to Wissing, there is no other way, the constitution stipulates it. The three-month offer was merely a “savings suggestion”. But if countries and transport companies are left alone, there is another risk: The Union borders could rear their ugly heads again. In addition to the price, users see the nationwide validity as a major advantage of the current 9-euro ticket.

According to Wissing, the transport ministers will discuss how to proceed at the autumn conference. A follow-up offer from September is therefore off the table. A successor could be launched at the end of the year at the earliest, but sooner in 2023.
