Nvidia cancels the release of the RTX 4080 12 GB
Nvidia’s RTX 4080 graphics card comes in a 12GB version and a 16GB version, but the former won’t see the light of day. At least for the moment and the manufacturer explains why.
“The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named correctly. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing”, admits Nvidia after the various criticisms on social networks as well as specialized media. However, the group ensures that the 16 GB model is still relevant and its release is still scheduled for November 16.
What is the problem ? The concern is that contrary to what the name may suggest, there is not only 4 GB of RAM difference. Indeed, here are the characteristics:
- RTX 4080 12GB: 7,680 CUDA cores, 2.31 GHz frequency (up to 2.61 GHz), 639 Tensor-TFLOPs, 92 Ray Tracing-TFLOPs, 40 Shader-TFLOPs, GDDR6X memory and 700 W minimum power supply
- RTX 4080 16GB: 9,728 CUDA cores, 2.21 GHz frequency (up to 2.51 GHz), 780 Tensor-TFLOPs, 113 Ray Tracing-TFLOPs, 49 Shader-TFLOPs, GDDR6X memory and 750 W minimum power supply
Initially, the 12 GB model was advertised for a price of $899. For its part, the 16 GB model will be available for $1,199. Nvidia isn’t yet saying when the 12GB model will see the light of day, but it’s sure the name will be different. RTX 4070? RTX 4070 Ti? Something else ? Mystery for now.
