Why you shouldn’t buy a 27-inch iMac now
Apple has been on a mission since late last year. Within two years, all computers will be transferred from Intel processors to the M1 chip. The latter is homemade by Apple and better in every way. The Apple M1 chip is more powerful than the competition from Intel and the future. There will be no more new Mac with Intel.
It is therefore all the more strange that Apple still sells these Intel computers. In May, the company released a new iMac with a 24-inch screen. In addition to an M1 chip, this also has a new design and comes in all kinds of fresh colors. At the same time, Apple removed the 21.5-inch iMac from its range, but the 27-inch version is still available.

Pros of the 27-inch iMac
Why is Apple doing this? The 27-inch version is, except for two points, objectively less than the 24-inch version. Let’s highlight the positives first.
First, of course, we can’t get around the screen size. The 27-inch image is larger and therefore you have more screen space at your disposal. The second advantage of the largest iMac is the connections. The 27-inch version has many more inputs than its little brother with M1 chip.
The iMac with 27-inch screen has no less than four USB-a ports, two Thunderbolt 3 inputs (usb-c), an Ethernet connection and you can insert an SD card on the back. The most extensive version of the M1 iMac only has two Thunderbolt ports on the back, just as many USB 3 inputs and a place for the Ethernet Internet cable.
Which iMac should you buy?
Do these advantages of the 27-inch iMac outweigh the disadvantages? Not for most people. The iMac with M1 chip is objectively much more powerful than the 27-inch iMac with Intel chip. Moreover, you can simply expand the ‘small’ Mac with a USB hub, with which you can equalize the number of connections.
Then there is really only one advantage left: screen size. The 27-inch is slightly larger and has a slightly better resolution: 5K (5120 x 2880 pixels) versus 4.5K (4480 x 2520 pixels) on the 24-inch iMac. How important this is to you is of course very personal.
For most people, the smaller iMac is a much better deal. So it’s more powerful, more energy-efficient, has a more modern and thinner design, a much better FaceTime camera and all kinds of handy, small improvements. For example, the matching keyboard has a fingerprint scanner. For example, you can unlock the Mac by placing your finger on the Magic Keyboard.

New iMac on the way?
All that said, it looks like Apple may be announcing a new, larger iMac later this year. Whether this computer will have a 27-inch screen is still unclear, but it seems only logical that it will be larger than the 24-inch entry-level model. Apple always sells iMacs in different screen sizes.
In summary, you probably shouldn’t buy a 27-inch iMac for a while. If you’re not urgently looking for a new Mac, it’s better to wait and see what Apple comes up with later this year. Besides, according to rumors, new MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Pro are also coming this year. So exciting!
